On Sunday, May 16th, a group of 500 big hearted bikers hit the roads throughout the Tampa Bay area to raise money for local children’s charities. The bikers succeeded in this venture, raising a record amount of $62,000 as they participated in the 6th Annual Credit Union Cruise for Kids Motorcycle Poker Run, sponsored by the Tampa Chapter of Credit Unions.
The bikers revved up their motorcycles at 9:30am that morning, making four “poker stops” at Tampa Harley, Bahama Breeze, Fletcher’s Harley and Jim’s Harley, before ending the ride at the Quaker Steak & Lube Restaurant in Clearwater, FL. There, people turned out for a post-cruise celebration featuring live music by Jester, 50/50, bike contest, live auction and other giveaways.
Stephanie Hall, Director of Telethon/Giving for All Children’s Hospital accompanied two children who have received treatment from the hospital through the Tampa Chapter’s fundraising efforts. Both John Hughes and Charlie McNabb, along with their families joined the festivities and thanked everyone for their support. John Hughes, with a big smile on his face, pulled the 1st and 2nd place winning tickets. David Moralevitz won the grand prize, a $10,000 VISA gift card, sponsored by Fran M. Haasch and Night Hawk Towing & Repossessions, Inc. David picked up his ticket from Carly Rogers at Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union. Second Place winner, Brian Jerkins won a 4-night stay in Moose Creek Crossing Cabins, a biker-friendly resort in Pigeon Forge, TN. Brian picked up his ticket from Jeannie Osborne at Railroad & Industrial Federal Credit Union.
Over six years, the annual Credit Union Cruise for Kids has raised a total of $295,000 for donation to organizations which nurture children, such as The Children’s Home, Clothes to Kids, the Boys and Girls Club, The Ronald McDonald House, as well as All Children’s Hospital and the Pediatric Cancer Center. “I want to thank our sponsors and everyone for their support,” said Sharmon Lenth, President of the Tampa Chapter of Credit Unions. “The money we raised is no easy task in this economy. To me, that demonstrates the commitment our participants have toward this event, and the good causes it supports.”

On April 29, 2010, Credit Union employees representing the Tampa Chapter of Credit Unions were provided an opportunity to attend a two hour training seminar which targeted the Red Flags rules and guidelines. The training seminar was presented by William G. Berg, VP of Regulatory Affairs with the League of Southeastern Credit Unions.
GTE Federal Credit Union hosted the seminar serving a total of 44 attendees, representing 11 local Credit Unions. Mr. Berg demonstrated the Credit Union philosophy of “People Helping People” by ensuring that each Credit Union in attendance was given the necessary steps to ensure Red Flag compliance. The steps included how to implement responsibilities, monitor report activity, develop prevention methods and address suspicious activity thus minimizing risk. In addition, the audience shared best practices and collaborated on how to remain compliant at all times. Feedback from the credit unions confirmed this topic was timely and well-received.

Once again, Bay-area bikers will be on the road to help raise funds for donation to local children’s charities. Sponsored by the Tampa Chapter of the League of Southeastern Credit Unions, the 6th Annual Credit Union Cruise for Kids has been rescheduled for Sunday, May 16.
Registration is $10 and starts at 10:00 a.m. at Tampa Harley. The bikers will make three other “poker stops”–Bahama Breeze, Fletcher’s Harley, and Jim’s Harley–where they’ll pick up their poker hands, before making their way to the final stop at Quaker Steak & Lube Restaurant in Clearwater, FL, by 1:30.
The public is invited to join the party at Quaker Steak & Lube whether they ride or not. The band Jester is on from 11 to 1 and The Greg Billings Band will take the stage from 2 to 5. Fletcher’s Harley and Quaker Steak are also holding their Customer Appreciation Day offering a free barbecue lunch. The post-ride celebration will also feature door prizes, giveaways, a cash grab booth, and the Radical Randy Bike Show.
$5 tickets for a chance prize drawing for a $10,000 VISA gift card or the secondary prize, a 4-night stay at Moose Creek Crossing Cabin rentals in Pigeon Forge, TN, are available at Quaker Steak and local participating credit union branches.
The previous five Cruise for Kids poker runs have raised more than $200,000 for donation to organizations which nurture children, such as The Children’s Home, Clothes to Kids, the Boys and Girls Club, The Spring, the Ronald McDonald House, All Children’s Hospital and the Pediatric Cancer Center.
“Charitable organizations are still in a bind with lower contributions than they were used to before the recession,” said Sharmon Lenth, President of the Tampa Chapter. “But we are very enthusiastic about our mission and the participation our riders, partners, sponsors, and Credit Unions are bringing to this event. We need to continue to help support those organizations that are devoted to caring for the smallest members of our communities.”

On January 26, Credit Union employees representing the Tampa Chapter of Credit Unions were provided an opportunity to attend a half-day training seminar which targeted key elements of HASP (Homeowners Affordability and Stability Program), HARP (Home Affordable Refinance Program), and HAMP (Home Affordable Modification Program). The training seminar was led by Lyn McGregor, President of CU Support Services, Inc. and Mike Goetz of Outsource Solutions Group, LLC. Both companies are based in Tampa, FL and offer a variety of mortgage services to their members and customers, respectively.
After polling member credit unions during its 2010 strategic planning process, the Tampa Chapter identified a need for additional information and resources regarding HASP, HARP, and HAMP and quickly organized a seminar date and location. During the three-hour seminar, Ms. McGregor and Mr. Goetz provided the thirty-three participants a well-rounded summary and value of each program. In addition, the presenters offered advice, strategies, and clarification on many of the programs’ details and processes. Feedback from the credit unions confirmed the topics were timely and well-received.

On Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at their annual Volunteer Appreciation Night, the Tampa Chapter of Credit Unions presented checks to seven charities that benefit children in the Greater Tampa Bay area. The event serves as a thank you to Credit Union volunteer Board Members and Credit Union employees who volunteer their time throughout the year holding various fundraising and community involvement events. The dinner gives these volunteers an opportunity to see the culmination of their efforts throughout the year.

Representatives from each of the charities were on hand to receive these donations presented to them by the CEO’s and Board Members of local credit unions. The checks presented by the Chapter were part of the over $30,000 raised during the Chapter’s 5th Annual Cruise for Kids Motorcycle Poker Run, the Tampa Chapter’s signature fundraising event.

An additional $10,000 in matching funds was presented to All Children’s Hospital by CO-OP Financial Services as a part of their Miracle Match program that benefits the Credit Union for Kids program, which supports local Children’s Miracle Network hospitals. This is the second year in a row that The Tampa Chapter has been awarded $10,000 as a part of this program.

All of the funds presented will go towards a variety of initiatives including a new children’s hospital, programs to help abused children and at-risk children, and clothes and school supplies for school-aged children. After receiving one of the donations, Tim Marks from Metropolitan Ministries told the audience, “We provide school supplies for over 3,000 homeless children and we are 800 backpacks short. Tomorrow we are going shopping.”
